suspended kinetics

'Cascade'

Site-specific kinetic installation, School of Art and Design, Colchester Institute, Colchester, 2006.
Polypropylene, acrylic, nylon.
I wanted to create an 'environment', a visual form of music and a sense of being held in suspension: a space filled with colour and luminosity.  The feeling I have tried to create is of the stillness of water with shell-like organisms suspended in it, and of looking up through water towards the light.  I have also tried to create a sort of gentle music: crochets and quavers, notes and bars inter-playing and complementing each other, so that there are different sorts of quiet rhythms going on.  The slight movement of air in the stairwell enables the shell forms to rotate quietly. The profound simplicity of this piece creates a sense of charm and interest, calm and stillness.

'Loopy'
Site-specific kinetic installation, School of Art and Design, Colchester Institute, Colchester, 2006.
Polypropylene, nylon;  rigging: acrylic, steel.

An arrangmenet of mobius loop modules in two complementary translucent layers lit from behind by natural light.  The overall effect of lightness and liveliness is created by swirling modules arranged in alternating colours and further emphasised by slight movements of air.

'Regatta'
Site-specific suspended kinetic installation, School of Art and Design, Colchester Institute, Colchester.

Polypropylene, nylon, aluminium.

Sailing is a big part of living in East Anglia. I have tried to
recreate the feeling of a fine regatta day when the water is full of fluttering sails.
